(SD)-SDHSAA Considering Adding Girls Wrestling
PIERRE, S.D. - The South Dakota High School Activities Association is considering a proposal to certify girls' wrestling for next season.
The state's athletic directors are reviewing a plan with 4 weight classes and a state tournament bringing in the top 8 rated girls at each weight regardless of class or region. After the ADs vote, the SDHSAA board will hold a first reading next month and a second reading in June.
There are currently 21 states that sanction girls wrestling as a high school sport, but the number of girls in high school wrestling nationwide has increased by more than 2,500% from 804 in 1994 to 21,124 this past season according to the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
South Dakota had more than 35 girls wrestling on boys teams this past winter.
