(Chadrad Sports)- The Morrill Lions were on the winning side of the scoreboard in three of their four basketball games against Crawford and Sioux County over the weekend.

The Crawford boys were the only ones to win the upset against the Lions Friday night in a 52-45 victory. The Rams won the game on the strength of its first half play in which they surged to a 14-9 lead after one period and secured a 29-22 edge at half-time. The two teams were evenly matched in each of the final two frames, each netting 12 points in the third and 11 in the fourth. The Rams shot 85% from the free throw line, besting the Lions’ 65% figure. Crawford also out-blocked Morrill 15-11 and brought down more rebounds as well.

The Crawford girls challenged the Lions in the second half, coming from behind in the third to pull within two points before taking a 40-35 loss. Morrill opened with a 12-4 run in the first quarter and led by 17-7 at half-time. The Rams regrouped during the break and put together a 15-7 run in the third frame. The final period saw the Lions edge the Rams 16-13 for the win.

The Lions’ boys used a strong second half to defeat the Sioux County Saturday 64-35 after facing an early challenge from the Warriors. Sioux County led early with seven straight points by Tommy Watson, though by the time the first period was over, Morrill had earned a narrow 13-12 advantage. The Lions added 14 points in the second for a six-point edge at half-time. They retained the momentum with a 22-7 run in the third and capped the victory with a final 15 points, holding the Warriors to single digits in the fourth as well. Tristan Hunter led the Warriors on the scoreboard with 12 points.

The Lady Lions scored 24 points from the free throw line in a 63-47 victory over the Sioux County girls. The teams were tied at nine after one quarter of play, and Morrill led by only four points at half-time. The Lions opened the third quarter with a bit of a run to expand their lead only to see the Warriors tie the game at 33. Morrill led 43-37 after the third quarter and then netted 20 points in the final frame, half from the charity stripe, for the win.

Sioux County had two players in double digits – Karlee Juhnke with 19 and Kailey Klein with 11.
