(Neb.)- Denke Takes 2nd At Girls State Wrestling Tournament
(Chadrad Sports)- Chadron High wrestler Paige Denke took runner-up honors at 106-lbs at the first ever NSWCA girls state wrestling championships last Saturday in York.
Denke rolled through pool action, pinning both Abby Wimer of Fremont and Brianna Miller of Platteview in under a minute each. Denke's dominance continued in the quarterfinal round, taking down Ichell Rivas of West Point-Bemmer in just 15-seconds.
In the semifinals, Denke recorded her toughest match to that point, but still earned the pin over Afftynn Stusse of Battle Creek.
The championship match was a back and forth affair. Denke fell behind Flavia Nagatani of Kearney early 2-1 in the 1st period, but rebounded with a takedown in the 2nd period to tie the match at 3 going to the 3rd period. Nagatani got a 2-point takedown 57-seconds in to the final period and held off Denke the remainder of the way to earn the win.
The event was formed after the Nebraska School Activities Association failed to pass the addition of girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport last year. Many believe that vote will change this year and that girls wrestling will be sanctioned as time moves forward.
Over 100-girls competed in this years tourney.
