CHADRON - Chadron won both the boys and girls titles Saturday at the 2018 Chadron Rotary George Watson Holiday Classic, beating Valentine in both. The girls score was 50-31 and the boys 61-54.

The Lady Cardinals never trailed, but the game was tied at 2 and 8. Chadron led 11-8 after the 1st quarter, pushed the margin to 20-13 at the half and 33-25 before pulling away in the 4th quarter.

Senior forward Peyton Underwood scored Chadron's first 6 points and their first 4 in the 2nd half before ending with a game-high 14 while junior Shae Bailey followed up her 17 point five 3-pointer Friday effort against Custer with 13 points and another 3 treys.

Valentine’s only double figure scorer was senior Mataya Eklund with 10 points that included a pair of 3s.

The boys game featured a series of short runs by both teams. Chadron led 19-12 after a 1st quarter that saw Kristian Bartlett score 10 with a pair of treys, but the Badgers finished off the half with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 26.

Valentine took its first leads in either game at 28-26 and 31-30, but Chadron led 40-33 going into the final quarter. The Cardinals got the lead to 10 at 49-39 only to see the Badgers rally once more to get the deficit down to 4 at 54-50 before Chadron pulled away for good.

The Cardinals scored their last 9 points and 10 of their last 12 from the foul line, hitting 9-12 from the charity stripe in the period and 14-24 for the game. Valentine, which was 7-10 on free throws in the 1st half, slumped to 5-11 in the 2nd.

Chadron center Pat Rust, 7" taller than any of the Badgers had a game-high 21 points despite struggling from the line, where he was 4-10. Bartlett finished with 15 points and Colton Olson added 10, including 6 free throws in the 4th quarter.

The Baders were led by Jaydon Owen with 15 points, 9 in the 4th quarter before fouling out with just over a second remaining. Valentine had no other players in double figures.

The Custer Wildcats downed the Hemingford Bobcats to win both consolation games, taking the girls contest 55-37 and the boys 81-60.

The Custer girls led 13-7 after a quarter and 27-17 at the half, then put the game away by outscoring the Bobcats 20-7 in the 3rd quarter.

Mallory Delmont, Josey Wahlstrom, and Kelsey Herman each had 12 to lead Custer while Hemingford senior Lauren Gasseling had a game-high 22 points that included a trio of 3-pointers.

The Custer and Hemingford boys were tied at 18 after the first period, but the Wildcats dominated the next 2 quarters, outscoring the Bobcats 29-16 in the 2nd and 19-8 in the 3rd to put the game out of reach.

Custer sophomore Jace Kelley led all scorers with 20 points including 4 treys, while Nolan Patzlaff, only senior on either Custer team, added 15 with 3 baskets beyond the arc. Sophomore Kenny Wyland was the only Hemingford player in double-digits with 18 points and 4 treys.
