CHADRON - The Chadron boys and girls will play Valentine Saturday for the titles at the Chadron Rotary George Watson Holiday Tournament while Hemingford and Custer, SD, square off in the 3rd place games at the Chicoine Center at Chadron State College.

Valentine beat Hemingford 72-53 in the opening girls game and 42-28 in the first boys game, the first win in 7 tries for the boys, before Chadron swept Custer 57-21 and 50-38, the Chadron boys breaking a 4-game losing streak.

The Lady Cardinals jumped out to a 7-0 lead, only to see Custer close to 9-6 at the end of the 1st quarter. It was all Chadron after that as they held the Wildcats to 3 points in the 2nd period to take a 25-9 lead into intermission.

It was more of the same in 2nd half as the Cardinals outscored Custer 15-8 in the 3rd quarter and 17-5 in the final period.

Shea Bailey led the way with 17 points on 5 treys - 3 of them in the 2nd half - and a pair of free throws while freshman Olivia Reed had 11 of her 13 points in the 1st half. Dawn Dunbar added 9 points and True Thorne 8.

The boys game started much like the girls game as Chadron jumped out to a 5-0 lead and Custer tied it 5-5 going into the 2nd quarter.

The Cardinals pushed out to an 18-12 halftime lead and built a 14-point lead midway through the 3rd period when Custer closed out the quarter on a 10-0 run to cut the margin 29-23.

The Wildcats got to within 2 at 31-29 and 4 at 37-33, but Chadron took over down the stretch behind Colton Olson with 13-3 run before Custer scored the final basket of the game in the final :30.

Olson had 10 of his game-high 17 points in the 4th quarter and hit a 3-pointer in both the 1st and 4th periods. 6-9 Pat Rust repeatedly block shots and took used his height advantage to score 12 points despite making only 4 of 7 free throws. Cooper Heusman added 9.

Saturday's schedule begins with the girls 3rd place game between Hemingford and Custer at 10:00, followed by the same schools in the boys 3rd place game at 11:30.

6-3 Chadron meets 2-5 Valentine for the girls title at 1:00 with the 4-5 Cardinal boys squaring off against the 1-6 Badgers at 2:30.

Both Chadron games will be broadcast on Stereo AM 610 KCSR with streaming on chadrad.com and the KCSR appl. Pregame for the girls is scheduled for 12:50, but could be later if the Hemingford-Custer games run long.
