(Neb)-WNCC Men And Women Both Make NJCAA National Tournaments
SCOTTSBLUFF - The Western Nebraska Community College men's and women's basketball teams are both headed to the NJCAA National Tournaments...which both begin next Tuesday, the women's tournament in Lubbock, Texas, and the men in Hutchinson, Kansas.
The Cougar men clinched their first berth in 15 years on Saturday when they beat Otero JC 86-78 in the Region IX title game, but the Lady Cougars had to sweat out 2 days of waiting after falling to Casper in their regional title game over the weekend.
In fact, they had to wait even longer because they were in the final pairing announced in the NJCAA selection show Monday morning, getting the 22nd seed in the 24-team tournament.
The 29-4 Cougars will face 24-6 Tallahasee Community College in the first round next Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. MST. This is the second straight year that WNCC has appeared in the national tournament and the fifth time in the last 6 years.
Casper College, who topped the Cougars 85-75 in the regional tournament title game, earned the 10th seed and will face #23 South Georgia Tech on Monday at 3 p.m.
While the WNCC women have been frequent visitors to the NJCAA national tournament, the Cougar men are in for the first time in 15 years after winning the Region IX title Saturday with an 86-78 win over Otero Junior College
Monday, they learned they're the 15th seed and will face #18 Holmes Community College out of Goodman, Mississippi, next Monday at 11:00 MT.
Holmes is 24-4 on the season while the Cougars enter regionals at 26-7.The winner will play Northwest Florida State, the second seed, on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Region IX got two teams in the men's tournament as well as the women's as Otero earned a 19th seed and will face #14 Motlow State, on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
