(Neb.)-Eagles Open Indoor Season With Good Results
SPEARFISH, S.D. -- December 2, 2017 -- Chadron State College track and field athletes won seven events in both the men's and women's competitions and posted five marks the meet provisional qualifying standards for the National Indoor Meet while opening the season at Black Hills State's Yellow Jacket Holiday Open Meet on Saturday.
Chadron State's first-year head coach, Riley Northrup, said he was pleased with both the marks and Eagles' competitiveness.
As anticipated the Eagles did best in the throws and jumps.
Three of the provisional marks were in the weight throws. They were claimed by Ashton Hallsted andAshlyn Hanson, who were one-two in the women's competition with marks of 58-feet, 9 ¾ inches and 58- ¼, respectively, and Cory Martens, who won the men's event with a heave of 59-1 ¼.
The throws by Hallsted, a sophomore from Casper, and Martens, a junior from Newton, Kan., were career bests.
Freshman Isaac Grimes of Rancho Verde, Calif., got his collegiate career off to a promising start by exceeding provisional qualifying marks while winning in both the long and triple jumps. His jumps measured 23-11 and 47-9.
Another double winner for the Eagles was junior Maddie Brashears of Fort Morgan, Colo., who won both the 60-meter dash and the long jump.
The women's other event winners were senior Alisha Heelan of Lewellen in the 300 meters, freshman Whitney Riesen of Scottsbluff in the 3000 and junior Chasity Horton of Fountain, Colo., in the high hurdles.
Others CSC men who won events were sophomore Javan Lanier of Aurora, Colo., in the 60 meters, junior Austin Fajfer of Highlands Ranch, Colo., in the 600, and senior Blake Jacobs in the of Littleton, Colo., in the shot put.
The Eagles also won both 4x400 relay races.
Northrup said the CSC throwers and jumpers will enter a meet hosted by Colorado Mines this weekend to wrap up the 2017 portion of the schedule.
