(Neb)-No Injuries In Long Armed Standoff In North Platte

By: John Axtell Posted at: 06/28/2020 10:26 AM
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) - A nearly 6-hour armed standoff at a North Platte residence early Saturday morning ended without injuries and with the gunman in custody.

51-year-old Wesley Hawkins is being held on charges of attempted 1st-degree assault on a police officer, felony use of a weapon, and terroristic threats.

Deputy North Platte Police Chief Steve Reeves says officers went to the house several times after reports of disturbances, the last about 4:00 am when Hawkins, who had an outstanding warrant for stalking, began throwing things at a neighboring house.

Chief Reeves says Hawkins went back in his house when officers arrived, but quickly came out with a pistol, yelled at the officers, and fired multiple shots in their direction before retreated into his house.

Police established a perimeter and were joined by Lincoln County sheriff's deputies and Nebraska State troopers with the State Patrol SWAT team responding later in the early morning.

Reeves says after repeated attempts to convince Hawkins to come out voluntarily were unsuccessful, a search warrant was obtained and the SWAT team used an armored vehicle to deploy a chemical agent into the home that incapacitated Hawkins and allowed him to be taken into custody.
