(SD)-Maximum Sentence In Fatal Rapid City Hit-And-Run
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The driver who killed a 1-year old Rapid City girl in a 2018 hit-and-run crash in Rapid City has been given the maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.. 37-year old George Matousek had pled guilty to 2nd-degree manslaughter in the death of 1-year-old Mackayla Dillon.
Additional charges of hit-and-run with injury and driving under suspension were dropped as part of the plea deal accepted by Matousek.
2nd-degree manslaughter usually has a maximum of 10 years, but Matousek received an additional 5 years under South Dakota's habitual offender laws for prior felony convictions for identity-theft in Washington State and drug-ingestion in South Dakota.
Prosecutors said Matousek was driving "at an extremely high rate of speed" when he hit 2 cars in an intersection Oct 5, 2018. Dillon was killed and 2 adults in the car driven by her mother were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, although both survived.
Matousek fled the scene and wasn't identified as the driver until the following Sept after nearly a year of police work that included analyzing witness interviews, surveillance footage and forensic evidence.
The following month, Matousek was booked into the Spokane County Jail in Washington state on unrelated charges and the South Dakota warrant was discovered. He was eventually extradited and returned to Rapid City in early February.
