PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - Sioux Falls School Superintendent Brian Maher has been named the new CEO of the South Dakota Board of Regents, pending formal approval by the board next week.

The regents oversee South Dakota's 6 public universities as well as the state schools for the visually and hearing-impaired.

Maher has been the Sioux Falls superintendent for the last 5 years after 16 years as a superintendent in Nebraska at Kearney and Centennial, earning honors as Nebraska Superintendent of the Year in 2015.

Regents President John Bastian says the board was "very impressed with Dr Maher's continued success as an administrator," calling him "well versed in the issues facing higher education in the state with his K-12 experience an asset in leading the 2 special schools,

Bastian says the future of South Dakota "depends on K-12, the technical colleges, and the universities working together on a common goal: to educate students and give them opportunities they otherwise would not have had (with) Dr Maher the leader to help the board achieve that goal."

Maher says he's honored to be named executive director and CEO, and embraces the opportunity to continue to learn and make a difference in higher education.

A Nebraska native, Maher began his career in education by teaching mathematics, computer science, and physics. His bachelor's degree in math education is from Midland University, with a master's from UNO, and doctorate in educational administration from UNL.
