(SD)-AG Rules Rapid City Cop Shooting Justified

By: John Axtell Posted at: 06/15/2020 11:45 PM
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) -  South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg says a fatal shooting by Rapid City police last month was a justified use of deadly force.

Ravnsborg and the state Division of Criminal Investigation released a summary Monday on the death of 30-year old Anthony Angel of Rapid City, killed May 13 in a shootout with officers.

According to the DCI report summary, police stopped a vehicle that was under surveillance for possible illegal drug activity and Angel, a passenger, got out.

He backed away from officers and aimed a handgun at them, triggering an exchange of shots. The DCI says Angel and one officer fired simultaneously, each getting off 2 rounds.

One of Angel's shots hit the ground in front of the officer while the other went through the windshield of a patrol car. Both of the officer's shots hit Angel, one grazing his leg and the other striking his head. He died the following day at a Rapid City hospital.
