(Neb)-New Unemployment Claims Continue To Drop
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska saw another dip in new unemployment claims last week after a record-setting surge in April driven by the coronavirus pandemic.
The U.S. Dept of Labor says the state received 5,923 claims last week, down 139 from the previous week. The weekly numbers have steadily declined since a record of nearly 27,000 in early April, but are still than average.
Unemployment claims filed in Wyoming dropped 42% last week as the state further eased coronavirus-related restrictions. New filings totaled 1,911, which is still 832% higher than a year ago. Wyoming has processed more than 38,000 unemployment claims since March 14.
South Dakota claims are also lower with 3,806 initial filings next week. That's down 1,463 from the previous week.
Nationally, nearly 39 million people have filed for jobless aid over the last two months due to state-mandated social distancing restrictions on businesses as well as reduced business activities as Americans have stayed sheltered at home to avoid spreading the coronavirus.
