(SD)-Gunman In Shootout With Rapid City Police Dies Of Wounds

By: John Axtell Posted at: 05/14/2020 11:37 PM
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - A spokesman for South Dakota Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg says the man critical wounded by Rapid City police after he shot at them during a Wednesday evening traffic stop died Thursday morning of his wounds.

Authorities have not released his name or those of any officers involved.

Tim Bormann says the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigations has taken over the case and will send its report to Ravnsborg in about a month. The attorney general will then decide if the shooting was justified.

Rapid City Police Chief Ken Jegeris said Wednesday evening that it was clear from the officers and others than the man had intended to shoot one or more of them. No officers were hit, but one cruiser was.

The gunman was one of 3 people in the car that was stopped about 6:30 Wednesday, but Chief Jegeris has not released the reason for the traffic stop, in which seat the gunman was sitting, how many officers fired, how many times the man fired, or how many times he was hit.

The other 2 occupants of the car were described as uncooperative in their initial interviews with police, and Pennington County State's Attorney Mark Vargo says he can't comment on any pending charges against the pair.
