(SD)-Noem Hopes To Use Coronavirus Aid To Plug Budget Gaps

By: John Axtell Posted at: 05/08/2020 02:20 PM
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) -  South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem says a special legislative session to rework the state’s budget won't be necessary if the federal government allows her to use federal aid that's supposed to be for coronavirus-related expenses to fill in revenue shortfalls.

South Dakota state revenue is down over $30 million dollars from this time last year, and Noem says she's looking to the federal government for guidance before spending the coronavirus money.

Republican Noem, who has strongly backed President Trump during the pandemic, has lobbied the White House for permission to put the state's $1.25 billion in coronavirus aid towards filling in holes in the state budget caused by the economic impact of the shutdown.

The administration had strongly opposed putting money for normal government operations into the relief bills.
