(Neb)-Nebraska Jobless Rate Falls to 2.9%

By: John Axtell Posted at: 03/16/2020 04:58 PM
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska's unemployment rate dropped a tenth of a point in January to 2.9%, also a tenth of a point under January of last year.

This is the time of year when the Dept of Labor is benchmarking, the process of aligning estimated numbers with confirmed statistics to help make sure data released is of the highest quality.

Because of the benchmarking process, only January jobless numbers are available for individual cities and areas. Grand Island came in at 4.8%, Omaha 3.1%, and Lincoln 2.6%. The Scottsbluff Micropolitan Statistical area, which also includes Banner County, had a unemployment rate of 3.4%.

State unemployment rates are adjusted for seasonal factors while those for individual cities and areas are not, making comparisons between the two types meaningless.

Nebraska Labor Commissioner John Albin says the state's total labor force and the number of employed workers both rose in January from December and a year ago, but with normal seasonal declines in some industries.
