(Neb)-Classes As Usual Monday For CSC, WNCC

By: John Axtell Posted at: 03/13/2020 07:32 AM
CHADRON - Although there's been no formal public announcement, Chadron State College is planning for classes as usual when spring break ends on Monday and won't - at least at this point - join other schools in extending the vacation and moving to online classes only.

A statement from CSC Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr Jim Powell sent to students Thursday evening says that school will resume with face-to-face classes but with plans in place to "activate alternative teaching and learning models" if the coronavirus situation worsens.

The letter also recommends that students who have symptoms of COVID-19 delay returning from spring break and stay home in self-isolation while contacting their personal health care professionals for further actions. Students being directed to self-isolate will not be penalized for absences or required to provide formal documentation of such instructions.

It does not say what procedures the college has for self-isolation by students after they return to campus, what would trigger a decision to switch to alternative teaching models such as all-online courses, or how such a change would be done if required.

Western Nebraska Community College is also returning from break on Monday with class as normal, but the 4 branches of the University of Nebraska system - which start spring break next Friday - will go to all virtual, online or alternative instruction when they return on the 30th. UNL and UNO are also both canceling next week's classes.

Eastern Wyoming College, currently on Spring Break, has cancelled all of next week's classes and activities both on the main campus and in Douglas, and is looking at the possibility of going to alternative instruction. Employees are expected to be at in-service and training Monday except anyone who is sick, has been sick, or has traveled out-of-state.

Creighton is suspending in-person courses next week and switching to full-scale distance learning on Monday, March 23. Creighton has a target date of resuming in-person courses on April 13, and will confirm a decision on whether or not to go back to them no later than April 6.

Doane University in Crete is canceling all in-person classes next week and extending the current Spring Break of its residential students one additional week. All classes will resume on the 23rd in an online/virtual format and be taught online for the remainder of the term.

Black Hills State University, South Dakota School of Mines, and the other 4 state universities in South Dakota are now on spring break but are getting an extra week through next Friday. They've made no decision on in-person versus on-line classes.

The University of Wyoming has spring break next week, but Acting President Neil Theobald announced yesterday that the vacation will be extended an additional week to the 30th to give faculty more time to prepare for online-only teaching – if the switch is needed.
