(Neb)-Chadron Library Backers Asking Council To Support Expansion

By: John Axtell Posted at: 02/13/2020 11:44 AM
CHADRON - Backers of the Chadron Public Library are hoping residents turn out in large numbers at Monday night's city council meeting to convince council members to formally endorse a multi-million dollar renovation-and-expansion project.

Library Director Rossella Tesch says they're not asking the city to make any kind of financial commitment at this time, just a formal show of support.

Tesch encourages library supporters who can't attend Monday's meeting to write or email the council members and ask for passage of the resolution.

The non-profit Chadron Library Foundation, which raises funds to support the library, has been exploring a new or expanded facility for more than a decade.

It commissioned a study in 2009 that recommended a library of about 16,000-square feet - more than twice the space of the existing library, which was built with a grant from Andrew Carnegie and renovated with a small expansion in the 1960s.

The Library Board in 2013 advanced from some 2 years of planning to chose the Denver firm of Humphries|Poli Architects to design the Library renovation and addition.

After several months of community input, Humphries Poli came up with a design estimated to cost at that time about $6-million dollars, with the design going on the shelf until a time in the future when major capital campaign would begin.
