(SD)-OST Taking Over Law Enforcement From BIA

By: John Axtell Posted at: 02/03/2020 08:39 AM
PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) - Oglala Sioux Tribal police have taken over law enforcement duties on the Pine Ridge Reservation  from the Bureau of Indian Affairs - and with the BIA's blessings.

OST Police Chief Robert Ecoffey says the tribe wasn’t getting “enough resources in terms of manpower” from the BIA, which says it supports the move under the 1975 Indian Self Determination and Education Assistance Act.

Ecoffey's 53 officers and 9 detectives will take control of the BIA's $1.3-million dollar budget along with its property, equipment and responsibilities, which include investigating higher-level crimes on the reservation.
