(Wyo)-Bill Allows Tolls On I-80 Headed To Wyo Legislature
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - Wyoming lawmakers will try again during next month's budget session to lay the groundwork to collect tolls on Interstate 80, but drivers would not be paying to use the freeway anytime soon. Tolls would require federal approval and likely take a decade or more to implement.
The Wyoming Legislature's Joint Highways, Transportation and Military Affairs Committee has endorsed an I-80 toll bill for the session that begins Feb 10, but since it's not directly related to the budget it would require a 2/3rds vote to be introduced.
Lawmakers have been discussing I-80 tolls as a way to raise money for roadwork for at least a decade, but interest has increased since the slump in the coal and natural gas industries left Wyoming facing major budget deficits.
