(Neb)-Box Butte Co Public Defender Charged With Dealing Cocaine
GERING - Box Butte County Public Defender Jon Worthman was arrested Tuesday night on charges of dealing drugs following an investigation by the WING Drug Task Force.
The 52-year old Worthman is charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribution. He was released Wednesday morning after paying 10% cash on a $150,000 bail
Assistant State Attorney General and former Scotts Bluff County Attorney Doug Warner has been named special prosecutor for the case, but no date has been set for Worthman's first appearance.
Court records show Worthman was arrested in Scottsbluff after allegedly purchasing about an ounce of cocaine from an individual working with WING.
Worthman was contacted by WING investigators and Scottsbluff police shortly after the buy and was arrested after the cocaine was found in his vehicle.
The court records also show that Worthman later told investigators that he uses cocaine himself and had accepted the drug in the past in exchange for legal services.
Worthman was elected as Box Butte County Public Defender in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018. He also serves as a deputy public defender for other counties including Dawes when conflicts of interest arise.
