CHADRON -  The Chadron City Council last night celebrated the long career last night of city street superintendent Terry Birnbaum, who retired at the end of 2019 after nearly 38 years with the city, almost 25 as superintendent. Birnbaum was the city Employee of the Year in both 1996 and 2018.

The council passed a resolution of commendation and presented him with a plaque of appreciation. Birnbaum recounted how he pestered then-City Manager Carl Dierks for a job almost 4 decades ago.

This is actually Birnbaum's second retirement. The first in 2005 marked the end of a long second career as member of the Nebraska Army National Guard that saw him finish as the top non-commissioned officer of the local unit.

The city is hosting a retirement reception for Birnbaum today that's open to the public. It runs from 1:00-till-3:00 at City Hall.

Birnbaum's successor as street superintendent was also introduced at last night's council meeting. Although he's new to the job, Wade Yada  is no stranger to the street department. He's lived in Chadron for 22 years and  worked for the city for 5. He's also been a candidate for employee of the year.
