(Neb)-Gov Proclaims Human Trafficking Awareness Month

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Governor Pete Ricketts, Attorney General Doug Peterson, a number of State Senators, members of the Nebraska Human Trafficking Task Force, and representatives of several non-profit organizations gathered at the Capitol Monday morning to recognize January 11th as National Human Trafficking Awareness Day and January as Human Trafficking Awareness Month.

Participants in the ceremony said Human Trafficking Awareness Month creates an essential opportunity for Nebraskans to learn about how serious the issue is in the state and how aggressively law enforcement and other agencies have been in combating it.

A 2015 report from the Governor’s Task Force on Human Trafficking found that at least 47 Nebraska school girls were known to be trafficked each year while a Human Trafficking Initiative study un 2017 from Creighton University found that 900 individuals are advertised for sex online each month in Nebraska.

Governor Ricketts used the Monday ceremony to highlight the multi-agency response developed and carried out by NHTTF and its many partners across the state, saying “Nebraska has taken an all-hands-on-deck approach to tackling the scourge of human trafficking (and)  continues to raise awareness and make progress towards ending the great evil of human trafficking, which is a modern form of slavery.”

The State of Nebraska was recently given an A grade by Shared Hope International for its effectiveness in combating human trafficking, a complete turnaround from the F received in 2011. AG Peterson said a 4-year review of the task force which illustrates what can be done when people with widely different roles are unified around a common mission.”
