(Neb)-CSC Mari Sandoz Wacipi Today Listen
The Chadron State College Mari Sandoz Wacipi is tomorrow in the Student Center Ballroom with a free lunch at noon and the Grand Entry of dancers at 1 p.m. Admission and parking are free and everyone is welcome.
CSC Professor and event organizer Dr Dave Nesheim says the words powwow and wacipi are both used when describing the celebration of Native American culture, but wacipi was chosen for this event because of the sponsorship of the Mari Sandoz Heritage Society.
Nesheim says people are welcome to come for all or part of the wacipi, adding that if you only have about an hour available you should make it for the Grand Entry.
Nesheim says the competitions at the wacipi are colorful and loud. He finds the dance competitions as an almost indescribable combination of beauty, grace, and athleticism.
Most wacipis focus on dance, drum, and song competitions, but Nesheim says this one has storyteller presentations at 3:00 and 4:00 going into more depth about aspects of Lakota culture.
All in all, Nesheim is certain everyone who attends will have a good time at the Mari Sandoz Wacipi
