(SD)-FBI Handling Investigation Into Fatal MVA With OST Officer On Res

By: John Axtell Posted at: 11/20/2019 02:02 PM
PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) - The FBI has taken over the investigation of a fatal crash last month on the Pine Ridge Reservation involving an Oglala Sioux tribal police officer.

Tribal officials say the officer was responding to a 911 call about gunfire when he crashed into a van on Highway 44 near Wanblee Oct. 25, killing the driver and a passenger.

The names of the officer and the victims have not officially been released, but relatives say 7-year-old Emily Rain White and her aunt, 41-year-old Raquel Yankton-Reinhart, were killed while 3 other passengers received injuries ranging from minor to severe.

FBI spokesman Kevin Smith tells the Rapid City Journal tribal police usually investigate crashes on the reservation, but since an officer was involved, the FBI is handling the case and will determine whether any crime was committed.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol will investigate what caused the crash.
