(Neb)-Chadron Man In Custody For Stealing Pickup And Dog
CHADRON - A Chadron man is in custody after stealing a pickup and a dog, then leading law enforcement on a chase from the Pine Ridge Reservation to near Chadron on Monday.
37-year old Chad Tobacco is being held on $25,000 on charges of felony possession of stolen property for the pickup and misdemeanor possession of stolen property for Bruno the Pit Bull.
Officer Craig Walton says Chadron police were notified around 4:40 pm Monday that tribal police were in pursuit of a stolen pickup with Tobacco, the suspected driver, wanted on a warrant and though to be armed with a shotgun and an assault rifle.
A Chadron officer spotted the pickup about 5 minutes later westbound on Bartlett Road near North Main Street, but did not give chase. Some 3 hours later, another officer conducting a follow up in the Regency Trailer Park spotted the stolen truck and called for backup.
While the officer was waiting for help to arrive, Tobacco left a trailer near the truck walking a pit bull, later identified as stolen. A search of the trailer uncovered the keys to the stolen pickup, but no weapons - although a 40-round magazine for an assault rifle was found in the pickup.
Tobacco was then arrested with the female owner of the pickup and Bruno the pit bull able to recover both later that night.
Officer Walton says the Chadron police department thanks the 3 other agencies involved in the case - the Pine Ridge Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol, and the Dawes County Sheriff's Office.
