(Neb)-Gering FD Sends Truck And Crew To Help Battle Calif Fire
GERING - The Gering Fire Department is lending a hand to the effort to battle wildfires in California.
A rural engine and 3-man crew left Gering on Sunday for Santa Rosa to help with the 77,000-acre Kincade fire in the Napa Valley wine country.
The department says on its Facbook page that the engine was assigned to a Task Force along with 4 others to reinforce lines in Division Echo of the containment plan.
The post notes that firefighters worked closely with other resources to reduce fuel to strengthen the line while 6 crews punched in over 5 miles of line. It also says the size of their camp is astounding, and that Gering firefighters are being taken care of and putting in solid work.
The decision of the Gering department to send the truck and crew brought praise from Nebraska U-S Senator Ben Sasse, who said he's always in awe at the willingness of Nebraskans to help those who need assistance.
The Kincade fire, as of Wed night, had destroyed 266 structures,133 of them homes, while damaging 47 other buildings, including another 32 homes. Almost 200,000 people were under evacuation orders at one point, but about 30,000 had been allowed to return home
