(SD)-Probation And $37K In Fines And Restitution For Illegal Hunting Trips

By: John Axtell Posted at: 10/31/2019 10:09 PM
PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) - A Black Hills man will spend two years on probation for guiding illegal hunting trips on the Pine Ridge Reservation.
A federal judge also ordered Everett Thomas MacKaben Jr. of Whitewood to pay a $10,000 fine and nearly $27,000 in restitution to the Oglala Sioux Tribe Parks and Recreation Authority.

MacKaben, who pleaded guilty in July, loses his hunting privileges while on probation.
Prosecutors say MacKaben acted as a commercial guide for out-of-state deer hunters, regularly taking them on hunts on reservation land in Oglala Lakota County.

MacKaben would also arrange to ship deer illegally killed in violation of tribal and state law to the home states of the hunters.
