(Neb)-"Trunk-Or-Treat" And VFD Benefit Chili Cookoff Return Today  Listen

By: John Axtell Posted at: 10/25/2019 09:14 AM
CHADRON - Two Halloween-time traditions are coming up today in Chadron -  the Chadron Kiwanis Trunk-or-Treat downtown and the Chili Cook Off sponsored by the Chadron City Employees Association at the Fire Hall.

Chamber of Commerce Director Gabby Michna says that although the Cookoff and Trunk-or-Treat are at the same time, 5:00-7:00 pm, they're only a little over 2 blocks apart and everyone should attend both.

For Trunk-or-Treat, businesses and organization hand out treats from decorated cars, pickups, and trailers - many while in costume and Michna encourages kids and adults to take part.

Michna's also excited about the return of a popular feature of Moonlight Madness, the predecessor of Trunk-or-Treat. Jesse Roberts, co-owner of EJ's BBQ, calls the Candy Shoot a "forgotten gem" tied directly to the history of her restaurant - or at least its location.

Chadrad Communications - 610 KCSR and 107.7 KBPY - will be among those out there from 5-7 handing out treats and we look forward to seeing everyone.

Michna says the Chili Cookoff is NOT intended to be serious competition, so all the teams have been encouraged to dress up and have fun. Although it runs until 7:00, many of the teams begin running out of chili around 6:30.

Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for kids with Chadrad, featuring master chefs Jeff Wing and Mike Kesselring, among the teams competing again this year.

There's also another option for chili tonight. The Chadron High School chapter of FBLA is holding its annual Chili Feed Fundraiser as a tailgate for the Chadron-Gering football game but in the high school commons.

It starts at 5:00 and runs till halftime of the game. Tickets are $5 and include a bowl of chili with toppings, drink and dessert.

All proceeds go to the Chadron FBLA chapter to help students with projects and attending the state leadership conference this spring.
