(Neb)-Chadron Day Of Caring Draws 70+ Volunteers, Work Done Ahead Of Schedule Listen
CHADRON - Wednesday was the United Way Day of Caring at the Assumption Arena in Chadron as volunteers packaged 25,000 meals for distribution in Dawes and Box Butte Counties through food banks, meal sites, school backpack programs, and the like.
United Way Serving Box Butte and Dawes Counties director Karen Benzel had worried over the weekend that she wouldn't have enough volunteers to do the job in 2 hours as she hoped and put out a call for more.
Benzel says the result was so much help that the packaging was done in less than 90 minutes.
The Day of Caring involved volunteers working in assembly lines to weigh bulk instant oatmeal and macaroni-and-cheese and put them into sealed, labeled packages.
Multiple packages were then boxed for delivery to the various distribution groups by UPS, which left with the boxes before cleanup was even finished at Assumption Arena.
The Day of Caring program is funded solely through grants and donations specifically earmarked for it. Benzel estimates it cost about $5,100 for the food distributed this year in Dawes and Box Butte Counties..
A larger United Way of Western Nebraska Day of Caring Tuesday in Gering saw some 250 volunteers packaging 70,000 meals - 15,000 more than last year - cost about $19,000
