(Wyo)-Panhandle Man Injured In Fatal Wyo MVA
The Wyoming Highway Patrol says one person was killed and 3 injured, one of them a Bayard man, in a 4-vehicle crash Monday afternoon on Highway 230 about 19 miles from the Colorado border near Laramie.
54-year old William Bennett of Bayard was taken to Ivinson Memorial Hospital in Laramie, then transferred to another facility where his condition is unknown.
The Highway Patrol says Bennett's semi was approaching a pickup that had stopped to make a left turn onto a side road when another pickup behind the semi pulled out and passed Bennett, then struck the rear of the first pickup.
The impact pushed the first pickup into the opposite lane, where it was struck head-on by a second semi. The driver of that semi then lost control and crossed the center line, hitting Bennett's semi before overturning and rolling one time.
Killed at the scene was the driver of the overturned semi, 52-year old Matthew Anderson of Annabella, Utah. Authorities were unable to determine if he was wearing a seat belt.
65-year old Steve Bottger of Laramie, driver of the pickup that was waiting to turn, was not wearing his seat belt while Bennett and the driver of the pickup that initiated the accident, 37-year old Brandon Chimenti of Laramie, were both wearing seat belts. All 3 were taken to Ivinson Memorial.
The Highway Patrol says driver inattention, unsafe passing, and speed - all by Chimenti - are being investigated as possible contributing factors. Anderson is the 123rd traffic death in Wyoming so far this year, 37 more than last year.
