(eb)-Nebraska Has First Vaping-Related Death
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says the state has suffered its first confirmed death associated with vaping.
The department says the Nebraska death occurred in May, but because of privacy laws it can say only the the victim was older than 65 years old and lived in the Omaha area.
There have been 12 deaths reported in 10 other states and over 800 cases of illness related to the use of e-cigarettes.
Nebraska currently has 11 cases of vaping-related illness and 2 suspected cases under investigation. Most are males, ranging in age from their late teens to their late 60s, and some were hospitalized by the illness.
Health and Human Services officials say they've alerted local health care providers of the situation and advised them to consider vaping-related illnesses as a possibility in patients that show respiratory problems and a history of vaping.
