(Wyo)-Wyo Supreme Court Gets Briefs In Contempt Of Court Battle
CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) - The Wyoming Supreme Court has received briefs on the legal battle between a judge in Gillette and the State Public Defender.
Circuit Court Judge Paul Phillips found Diane Lozano in contempt of court and began fining her her $1,500 a day in July after Lozano said in May that her office would no long represent Campbell County defendants charged with misdemeanors because her attorneys had too big a workload.
Lozano is challenging Judge Phillips' ruling to the Supreme Court, which oversees the Wyoming court system. The brief filed by the judge's lawyers last week contends he acted within his authority and interpreted state law correctly in finding Lozano in contempt of court.
