(SD-SD Mines Student Victim Of Apparent Fall In Custer State Park
CUSTER, S.D. - Searchers in Custer State Park late Wednesday afternoon found the body of a South Dakota School of Mines student missing since Saturday. Custer County Emergency Management says 22-year old Torger Henckel was "an apparent victim of a fall."
Henckel had told friends he was going out for a hike, but a formal search didn't begin until Tuesday afternoon when his car found in Custer State Park at the Little Devils Tower Trailhead, located between the Sylvan Lake Campground and Needles Eye Tunnel.
The ground and air search with about 30 individuals was halted Tuesday night and resumed Wednesday. The effort included drones, heat-sensing equipment from the Civil Air Patrol, and dogs. Henckel body was found dead around 4 p.m.
A Custer County Emergency Management spokesperson says Henkle's family told officials he had a love for nature and liked to go off the beaten trail to explore the rocks - jumping from one to another and taking in views.
A post on the Custer County Emergency Management website thanks all those who helped in the search.
