(Neb)-Trump Tweets Endorsement Of Sasse Reelection
WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) - Nebraska Republican Senator Ben Sasse has been one of the biggest critics - at times - of President Trump even before the 2016 election, but he's also voted for virtually all of the president's nominees and programs.
As a result, it wasn't a complete surprise when Trump endorsed Sasse's reelection bid last evening, tweeting his "Complete and Total Endorsement."
Nebraska GOP activist Matt Innis began a primary election challenge last month with a broadside against Sasse. Innis, former chairman of the Lancaster County Republican Party, said "You can't find anything he's really accomplished other than bashing the president."
Trump's tweet, though, says Sasse "has done a wonderful job representing the people of Nebraska. He is great with our Vets, the Military, and your very important Second Amendment. Strong on Crime and the Border."
Campaign spokesman James Wegmann says Sasse is "grateful for the President's kind words," explaining that the men "don't always see eye to eye, but they've built a relationship where they work together when they agree and they wrestle hard when they don't."
Wegmann says the president's endorsement underscores why critics like Innis are wrong when they claim Sasse isn't conservative enough even though he's rated one of the three most conservative members of the Senate.
