(Neb)-USFS Prescribed Burn SE Of Chadron Triggers Worried Phone Calls
CHADRON - The Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands began a 450-acre prescribed burn near Chadron today, triggering a large number phone calls and reports of the smoke being visible from as far away as Crawford and Hay Springs.
Pine Ridge District Ranger Tim Buskirk says the burn on the Collons Allotment 7-miles southeast of Chadron and west of Bordeaux Creek Road is intended to reduce hazardous fuels within the ponderosa pine stands and reduce pine encroachment into natural meadows.
Personnel from the Chadron and Crawford volunteer fire departments have conducted the burn along with state and federal agency firefighters. Crews will continue to monitor the fire area until it is out.
Prescribed fires are one of the most effective tools available to resource managers for restoring fire-adapted ecosystems, mimicking natural fires by reducing forest fuels, recycling nutrients, and increasing habitat diversity.
