ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The Indian Health Service, the federal agency that administers health care to more than 2.5 million Native Americans, has long been plagued with problems that include limited budgets, inadequate staffing, infrastructure issues, health disparities, and lack of accountability.
A federal report released Thursday says things won't get better unless the IHS takes a serious look at its organizational structure. The report by the Inspector General of the Dept of Health and Human Services is meant to maintain pressure on the agency,
The IHS recently released a five-year plan to address quality, management, operators, and access to health care but says change will take time.
