(Neb)-USDA Grant Funds Gering Loan To Scottsbluff Zoo For New Bear Enclosure
GERING - The USDA Rural Economic Development Loan/ Grant Program has approved $300,000 for a no-interest loan by the City of Gering to help the Riverside Discovery Center zoo in Scottsbluff build a new enclosure for 3 grizzly bears rescued as cubs last year in Wyoming.
Zoo Director Anthony Mason says the grant and a $60,000 match by Gering brings the Discovery Center "very close" to its funding goal. Mason says there's no firm construction date yet, but he hopes it's "very soon."
As the Discovery Center repays the loan to the city, Gering will use that money to establish a revolving loan fund to provide loans to businesses in the area.
The city received a similar USDA grant a few years ago that funded a no-interest loan to the Legacy of the Plains Museum for its expansion.
