(Neb)-Plea Deal In 2017 Traffic Death of 14-Year Old Scottsbluff Girl
KEARNEY, Ne. (AP) - A North Carolina truck driver charged in a 2017 traffic accident near Kearney that claimed the life of a 14-year-old Scottsbluff girl has accepted a plea deal.
39-year-old Drew Davis of Gastonia pleaded guilty to misdemeanor vehicular homicide in the death of Rachelle Kort after prosecutors lowered the charge from a felony. He's scheduled to be sentenced in September.
Davis was charged in 2017 with misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide following a 6-week investigation, but didn't return to Nebraska.
The case remained dormant until this past February when Davis was involved in another accident, this one in North Carolina. He was arrested when the Nebraska charge came to light, and prosecutors increased it to a felony in March - leading to his extradition in April.
Prosecutors say Davis had parked his semitrailer on the south shoulder of I-80 about 10-miles west of Kearney near the Odessa Intercharge on June 29, 2017, to look up directions. When he tried to merge back into traffic, his truck hit the sedan in which Kort was riding.
Investigators determined Davis was traveling between 15 mph and 20 mph at the time of the accident and didn't say see the car.
