(S.D.)- Tornado Strikes Just Outside Of Martin, SD
(Chadrad News)- South Dakota officials say a tornado that touched down late Saturday afternoon about 10 miles west of Martin near Swett did relatively little damage. Martin Fire and Rescue Chief Chris O'Bryan told Black Hills Fox that the biggest losses appear to be a cornfield and a small number of animals.
Bennett County Emergency Manager Jeff Siscoe told the stations that at least two homes were evacuated and about 150 people took shelter in the basement of the Martin American Legion Auditorium after the tornado siren went off. Although the tornado didn't strike Martin, high winds and half-dollar sized hail damaged the roof and windows of an unoccupied house.
Because the tornado was very localized, a number of people took pictures and video. Siscoe said while the coverage did help law enforcement track the storm, people should stay as far away as possible from a tornado. He adds though, that you should keep cell phones nearby during storms while keeping an eye on things and tuning into a source of up-to-date weather information.
