By: John Axtell Posted at: 05/15/2019 09:28 PM
WASHINGTON, D.C. -  All U-S and state flags across the country are flying at half-staff until sunset today in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day. President Trump and all 50 governors have issued proclamations for the flags, Peace Officers Memorial Day, and this week as Police Week.

President John F. Kennedy in 1962 designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.  In 1982, the National Police Officers Memorial Day Service began as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement.

Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world have converged on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Tonight's Memorial Service will be followed by the placement of a memorial wreath at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington.
