(SD)-Acting Supt Named For Mount Rushmore
KEYSTONE, S.D. (AP) - The National Park Service has named a 29-year veteran of the agency to serve as acting superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial after current superintendent Cheryl Schreier retires at the end of the month.
Denice Swanke is currently Deputy Superintendent of Denali National Park and Preserve in Alaska, but has also been superintendent of the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana and has held assignments in Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, and Zion National Parks.
Swanke has worked as a legislative liaison for the NPS in Washington and spent time with two other federal agencies, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service.
She holds a physical science degree from Western Oregon University and masters of public administration degree from the University of Montana
As for the permanent superintendent at Mount Rushmore, NPS Acting Midwest Regional Director Patricia Trap says the process of recruiting for the position has begun and that Swanke will be a great asset during the transition.
