(SD)-Quarry Expansion Gets Planners OK, But Final Decision Rests With Commissioners
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - The Pennington County Planning Commission has granted 3 permits for expanding a limestone quarry south of Rapid City off Highway 16, the main tourist route to Mount Rushmore, but the final decision rests with the county commissioners.
One of the 3 permits granted regional concrete giant Croell Inc automatically goes to the County Commissioners for final approval and opponents immediately appealed the other two to the commissioners.
Croell has been trying for more than 2 years to win approval of its plan to expand the Perli Pit Quarry, but has been opposed by area residents worried about increased truck traffic, potential releases of harmful chemicals and gases, and harm to the area scenery.
Croell argues that passing motorists won't see the mine, that state regulators have already considered possible environmental impacts, and that it's been working with the state Transportation Dept on plans to mitigate any other problems.
