(Neb)-A.G. Still Waiting For Documents From Catholic Church
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Nebraska Attorney General Doug Peterson is still waiting for the Roman Catholic church to turn over sexual abuse records ordered in sweeping subpoenas about two months ago, but the Archdiocese of Omaha and its attorneys say they can't release the documents without a court order.
Attorney Patrick Flood told a Lincoln judge Thursday that the only documents that haven't been released are confidential - psychiatric evaluations of alleged perpetrators, medical records, and settlement agreements.
Peterson's office issued the subpoenas in February to more than 400 Catholic churches and institutions, but with just a 3 day response deadline.
Flood says the demand to release documents dating back decades in so little time was "a ridiculous request," but Assistant Attorney General Ryan Post says it's disappointing that some view the investigation into child abuse as government overreach.
