(Neb)-Suicide Prevention Training Draws Full House
CHADRON - The Chadron Middle School Library was filled Wednesday with parents and community members eager to learn about a suicide prevention technique called QPR - question, persuade and refer - a method developed specifically to detect and respond to anyone emitting suicide warning signs.
QPR training teaches the questions to ask a person who is experiencing suicidal thoughts, how to persuade them to get help, and how to refer them to the appropriate resource. At the conclusion of the training, the participants receive a Gatekeeper Certificate and reference materials.
Leading the Chadron session was Amy Carnahan of Western Community Health Resources, who has trained nearly 500 QPR gatekeepers in the past year and a half.
Funding for the training has been supported by the 100 Women Who Care group and Region 1 Behavior Health, which provided an AWARE - Advancing Wellness and Resiliency in Education -grant to supporting suicide prevention training sessions for parents and families.
