(Neb)-Probation For Ex-Morrill Co VSO In Embezzlement Case
BRIDGEPORT, Neb. (AP) - Former Morrill County Veterans Service Officer Devin Heumesser has been sentenced to a year's probation, 30 days in jail, and restitution for stealing more than $18,000 during his 13-month tenure as the VSO in Bridgeport.
The 32-year-old Heumesser, who has already made full restitution of $18,389.38, pleaded guilty to 4 misdemeanor theft counts with prosecutors dropping a felony theft charge.
Complaints against Heumesser's work hours had led to a disciplinary hearing being scheduled in February of last year, but he quit before it was held. His interim successor found suspicious payments in the VSO account and contacted authorities, who investigated.
Court documents show that Heumesser made nearly 50 transactions of $100 to $1,500 he said were to assist local veterans, including many listed as going to specific veterans. When investigators contacted those individuals, all said they'd never received any money.
Investigators also found at least 18 checks either made out to Heumesser himself or had no documentation on who or what they were for. A warrant for his arrest was issued last May and Heumesser was arrested in July.
