(Neb)-Sidney Woman Charged In GoFundMe Scam
SIDNEY - A Sidney woman faces a misdemeanor count of unlawful taking after admitting she pocketed money raised through a GoFundMe page to help a Sidney family whose home was destroyed in an apartment complex fire.
Samantha Robertson created the page to help Barbara Serkiz and her family, but failed to send any money to Serkiz despite repeated requests.
Robertson offered a variety of excuses, including that GoFundMe had the wrong account number and that the online firm had sent a February email saying it would be releasing the money.
Court records show it wasn't until Serkiz threatened to file a fraud report that Robertson confessed she'd closed the GoFundMe page at the end of Dec and placed more than $1,600 in her own account.
Sidney police said Robertson claimed she kept the money for personal needs and rent because she was facing eviction, and that she planned to pay back the money when her income tax refund arrived.
Police say Robertson's landlord, though, told them she was not facing eviction and was not behind on rent, owing only the remaining balance on her security deposit.
