(Neb)-Bass Pro Closing Cabela's Distribution Centers in Sidney, Oshkosh
SIDNEY, Neb. (AP) - Bass Pro Shops says it will close the Cabela's distribution centers in Sidney and Oshkosh sometime this spring, eliminating 121 jobs in Sidney and 41 in Oshkosh. A merchandise return center in Wisconsin will also close.
Bass Pro, which purchased Cabela's for $5-billion dollars about 18 months ago, says the closures are part of an effort to battle Amazon and other online retailers by better serving customers with a new "fast and free 2-day shipping service.
The company says it's a result of an extensive review of all Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's operations that included an independent analysis by global logistics experts and shipping companies.
The review found the 77-year-old Sidney facility handles the least volume of the company's distribution centers while the streamlining of the return process eliminated the need for the stand-alone Oshkosh and Wisconsin return facilies.
The closures will be covered by Bass Pro's remaining 5 distribution centers across the country by expanding operations to 7 days a week and adding new jobs. The company says the affected Sidney employees can apply for those and other open positions elsewhere, or accept a range of benefits and support services.
Bass Pro says it remains committed to keeping a presence in Sidney because it "greatly respects Cabela's long-term ties" to the city. It also says every effort has been over the past year to maintain significant operations in the city and across Nebraska while maintaining an obligation to customers and employees.
Cabela's employed more than 2,000 people in Sidney in corporate headquarter, retail, and warehousing/shipping operations, but hundreds of those jobs and functions have been eliminated or shifted Bass Pro's headquarters in Springfield, Missouri.
