(Neb)-USFS Conducting Slash Pile Burns In Chadron Area Again
The U-S Forest Service is again taking advantage of cold, snowy weather to burn timber slash piles on the Pine Ridge Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands near Chadron. Smoke may be visible around the area at various times.
District Fire Management Officer Mike Mattmiller says the burning began yesterday and will continue as long as conditions allow. Forest Service personnel are conducting the burns and will check the piles at least daily until all the fires are extinguished.
Mattmiller says most of the piles being burned are south of Chadron in various areas, including along the Cliffs Road and near the Pine Ridge Job Corps.
Mattmiller says the slash piles are from mechanical thinning completed in forested areas of the District and some residue from previous fires. The idea is to reduce hazardous fuel accumulation and build-up on the ground to reduce the risk of catastrophic wildfire.
