(Neb)-Medical Pot Initiative Language Filed

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - Backers of an effort to legalize medical marijuana in Nebraska have filed formal paperwork for a statewide initiative petition to put the issue on next year's ballot.

State Senators Anna Wishart and Adam Morfeld, both of Lincoln, are co-chairing the effort by Nebraskans for Sensible Marijuana Laws, which submitted the proposed constitutional amendment Tuesday with the Secretary of State.

Wishart has introduced a bill legalizing the drug for medicinal purposes, but it faces stiff opposition from state and local law enforcement, Gov. Pete Ricketts, and prominent Nebraskans including former Husker football coach and Hall of Famer Tom Osborne.

Supporters of legalization have said they will pursue the ballot campaign if lawmakers don't pass a measure this year.
