(SD)-16 Years For 2017 Reservation Crash That Killed 3
PINE RIDGE, S.D. (AP) - A Pine Ridge Reservation man convicted in a drunken driving crash that killed a family on the reservation in 2017 has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Tyler Makes Him First had pleaded guilty to 3 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the crash that killed 42-year-old Waylon Red Elk Sr, his 34-year old pregnant wife Jaylene Pretends Eagle, and their 1-year-old son Waylon Red Elk Jr
Makes Him First, a corrections officer, was originally scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 4 but the proceedings were postponed and he was sent to jail after he tested positive for marijuana.
Makes Him First had a blood alcohol content of .28, more than 3 times the legal limit, when his pickup crossed the center line and struck the family's car.
